  • This is an extreme case, but I know how easy it is to go shopping as a form of entertainment
  • How easy it is to go on line and shop
  • Ebay is a real lure
  • Thrift shops are too

So I have some rules

  • Stay out of stores unless you need something
  • Shop with a list
  • Shop alone
  • Keep a record

Underground Atlanta - History of Underground

The Saturday before Christmas and this is one of the former stores at Underground Atlanta. It is sad. There are plenty of kiosks. A woman is telling a man's fortune. There are speciality product as really cheap watches, necklaces. The food court is open but with few diners.

The Age of Turbulence
11:05 AM PDT, August 31, 2007
I started thinking about what was to become “The Age of Turbulence” two years ago. My nearly two decades as Federal Reserve Chairman were coming to an end - a remarkable experience. After a lifetime observing how the world works as a business economist on Wall Street, it was exhilarating to be at the center of international monetary policymaking. Sure, I’d been President Ford’s White House economic advisor in the mid-1970s, but nothing fully prepared me for what I faced when President Reagan nominated me Fed Chairman in June 1987. So, in the waning months of my Fed tenure, I started getting excited about having time to stand back and think about all I’d been through – the frightening stock market crash of 1987, the boom of the 1990s, the trauma of 9/11, the climactic end of the Cold War, all told, a cascade of events propelling a new world forward at warp speed.
There was also a personal story to tell. I’d known every president from Richard Nixon to Reagan, Ford, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. And what about all those other assorted characters from my childhood in New York, my years as a jazz musician, my complete career switch to economics – and my friendship with Ayn Rand? I wanted to make the leap from writing economic analysis to writing in the first person about what I’d experienced. And after years of talking “Fedspeak” in carefully calibrated congressional testimony – I could finally use my own voice!
As I wrote “The Age of Turbulence,” I tackled the personal part first, but then started unraveling the detective story about the economy: what did all the economic shifts we began to detect in the late nineties mean? At the Fed, I had at first focused primarily on monetary policy – interest rates and the forces that determined their appropriate levels. But as the years rolled on, it became increasingly clear to me that we needed to understand an entirely new range of factors to implement policy effectively. I had had inklings of this new world, of course, but as I raced from one policy meeting to another, I never had time to sit back and think about all this. Was this a permanent change or just another technological evolution that would, with time, come to an end? Would the growing income inequality that seemed to be associated with this new paradigm create a backlash to the forces of globalization? And wasn’t this a dangerous trend for our democracy?
My term as Federal Reserve Chairman ended at midnight, January 31, 2006. The following morning, I started to write. You would think after all those years at the Fed and my earlier decades as an economist that I would have learned about as much as I could. But halfway through the book I realized that the story was leading me in surprising directions. I needed to refocus much of what I had written in my original drafts.
The final chapter was to forecast how I thought the world would work in the year 2030. But until I spent a year researching and writing and thinking about “The Age of Turbulence,” I had little idea how it would turn out. In fact, I was having so much fun rethinking some of my earlier assumptions, I was as anxious to read it as I hope my readers will be. In the end, I can confidently say writing that final chapter brought me—and the book—closure. It is not the grand finale of Beethoven’s Ninth, but for me, it hit the right chord.

Live to be One Hundred - Calculator

There are a lot of calculators that you can take on line. I just did one that indicated I would live to be 91.

These are things the caculator revealed I might do to live longer. This looks like a good checklist for New Years resolutions for 2009

Personal
+ 0.5 You noted that you don't manage your stress as well as you could. Do a better job and you could add half a year to your life expectancy
+ 0.5 You need to get more sleep. If you could get closer to 6-8 hours of sleep a night, you could add half a year to your life
+ 0.25 People who are optimistic about their aging fare much better. Turn your attitude around about your aging and you could add a quarter of a year to your life
+ 0.25 Brain strengthening activities can help you delay or escape memory loss and perhaps Alzheimer's disease. While you are already doing a bunch, increasing your frequency of brain-challenging activities to twice a week could add a quarter of a year to your life.
Lifestyle
+ 1.0 Minimizing or cutting out your caffeinated coffee consumption completely could provide you with about a year more in life expectacy
+ 0.5 Ultraviolet rays present in sunlight and tanning beds greatly increase your risk of skin cancer, including melanoma. They also increase wrinkles. Minimizing your sun exposure could add half a year to your life expectancy
Nutrition
+ 0.5 Osteoporosis (brittle bones) is a terrible disease that becomes more common with older age. Among the important ways to prevent osteoporosis, it is important to have adequate amounts of calcium in your diet. Add more dairy products to your diet or take 1500 mg of calcium a day. Doing so could add a half a year to your life expectancy.
+ 1.0 Iron is likely an age-accelerator and increases risk for age-related diseases. Stopping your iron supplement could add a year to your life expectancy
+ 0.5 Being more active in your leisure time, other than exercising, could add half a year to your life expectancy
Medical
+ 0.75 Examining yourself for cancer could add three-quarters of a year to your life expectancy
+ 1.0 Decreasing your bad cholesterol (called LDL cholesterol) to a normal or even lower level could increase your life expectancy by a year

Living to be One Hundred - the Calculators

There are a lot of calculators out there. Prof Gupta of CNN has recently noted on line that his prediction is only for 81. I tried one and it game me 92. Sleep was a big recommendation.

So what changes to make

This web page has good suggestions

Do I Really Want to Live to be One Hundred ?

I will be 75 in February. If I were to live to be 100 it would mean I still have a fourth of my life left, and 2009 to 2034 are certainly going to be WOW years maybe comparable to those of my grandmother's lives, when the world added electricity, automobiles, telephones, air transportation and significant urbanization. My father's mother actually had a Thor washer..it washed both clothes and dishes..in th early twentieth century.

I have been collecting something of a library of books on living to be very old, finding obituaries of 100 plus year old people and generally looking at what might lie ahead.

I am facing up to what it is like to be old. I am really old...face it...right now. So I am finding I enjoy being alone, not dealing with people treating me as an unwaned minority..."Are you all right ?" people keep asking.

Saving Money - Tips - Health

If you are 75 as I am, maintaining health is about the best way you can save money.

I love this quotation

The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, not to worry about the future, or not to anticipate troubles, but to live the present moment wisely and earnestly.
The Buddha

These are the steps I have taken

1.Insurance

A and B Medicare
Medigap
Part D..drugs
Dental insurance, though it is not especially good

2. Dental Health

My dentist of 10 years is across the street in the amazing Suntrust Building which is another reason for anticipating my quarterly visits and I have my cleanings and annual xrays on a regular basis. What I need to improve is more personal compliance with more regular flossing and brushing.

3. Taking maintenance drugs regularly

High blood pressure
High cholesterol
High Osteoporosis
Vitamins

4. Exercise

I belong to 2 health clubs
It is just a question of going regularly and engaging in a balanced program

5. Sleep
If you are sleeping 8 hours a night you are not spending money during that time. And you might have some interesting dreams.j

Saving Money - Tips - Don't Use Giving to Grandchildren as a Big Turn on

Last year I really got a charge out of buying my granddaugher some really great clothes. Some are classics...the black North Face down coat....black boots..and 12 wonder all of different colors (including strapless) in Size A32 bras from Target (which incidently sells the best brands of bras). But this is a good way to start savng and also a good place to teach lessons for life.

I have just reviewed records from my parents' lives and realize how they lived well but frugally.

There is a good Wall St Journal article about grandchildren and teaching economic facts.

http://blogs.wsj.com/juggle/2008/12/02/teaching-kids-lessons-from-the-recession/#comment-81830

So hear comes my big idea.

Use FACEBOOK. I also have access to their friends so could extend it beyond just my own grandchildren.

Saving Money - Tips - What You Need Versus What You Want

This is an excellent site that shows in detail how to put this excellent habit in place.

What you need vs. what you want and how to tell the difference ... - 12:37pmFor instance, I want a new computer. I could tell you that I need it to do my writing, but that would be a lie. I have a computer that's not dead yet. ...
www.wisebread.com/what-you-need-vs-what-you-want-and-how-to-tell-the-difference

If you are a "hoarder" as I am then this is a big problem in getting a budget under control. This is probably a real mental health problem, not just a minor problem.
However, the idea of starting with the simple distinction of want versus need is there.

Here for example is a "want" versus need that I have right now. I started collecting international dolls and have had the idea of having a museum. I just found some great African dolls in a neat place in Atlanta. I bought one of these dolls, but want all four big as they are.

How do I deal with this want ?

Saving Money - Tips - Free Entertainment - Atlanta's Parades

Not everybody lives 12 floors up the place parades start in Atlanta, Georgia but I do. I have a great view of West Peachtree where the parade organizes and Peachtree where they start. It is great entertainment and Atlanta has perhaps the most parades of any city.

January - the King holiday
March - St. Patricks Day
somewhere in here Gay pride, that goes in the other direction toward Piedmont Ave
July - Fourth of July
November - Veterans
December - Children's' Hospitals Christmas parade

There are sometimes sports parades and a Caribbean parade.

Saving Money - Tips - Vacation at Home

I dream of a freight trip around the world, a train trip through the West but next year my plan is to get a 53.00 MARTA Breeze card, take my trusty camera and systematically tour and document my home town, Atlanta and environs. In order to do this I need to approach it as though I were a real visitor and plan my trips. Perhaps I could also combine this with some real travel writing.

The Meltdown

I have recently purchased a number of books about the meltdown and am reading through them as I follow events on CSpan and online newspapers.

Niall Ferguson's book Ascent of Money was not published until May 2008 so he had a chance to add a final section anticipating the meltdown.

Then there is the Trillion Dollar Meltdown by Charles Morris

As far back as 2002 Krugman was writing in his collected oped pieces for the NY Times in The Great Unraveling "Uncle Alan may not be able to save us single-handedly"

December 19, 2008 Krugman gave a really interesting speech about the meltdown and what might be ahead...2010 might see things getting better, but then worse....and he also favored infrastructure assistance, ideally cultural assistance, but not likely.

His talk to the National Press Club is live right now. I do not know how long it can be accessed

http://www.c-spanarchives.org/library/index.php?main_page=product_video_info&products_id=282976-1

I will be able to check out Uncle Alan in his 2008 biography The Age of Turbulence Adventure's in a New World.

Curious about the backgrounds of all of our master of the universe including Paulson I have The Partnership the Making of Goldman Sachs by Charles D Ellis.

Finally I am into Chain of Blame by Paul Muolo who has been following the real estate bubble from the perspective of a trade publication.

What am I really doing this for. Of course it is all great reading, entertainment I suppose, but I am trying to decide how to structure my own life next year from retirement in a way to decide how best to handle my own economic affairs.
